洋書を読んでいると ask the right question （正しい問いを立てる）という表現が目に付きます。以前のブログで紹介しました Friedman の最新書 Thank you for being late に、
"In the 21st century, knowing all the answers won't distinguish someone's intelligence - rather, the ability to ask the right question will be the mark of true genius." (p.103)
「２１世紀では、全ての答えを知ることでは、人の頭の良さは区別できない。むしろ、正しい問いを立てる能力こそが、真の意味での天才（頭の良さ）を示すものになるであろう。」（拙訳）
にその表現があります。数年前に読んだ本 The Second Machine Age にも、
"As more data become available and as the economy continues to change, the ability to ask the right questions will become even more vital." (p.123)
「より多くのデータが利用できるにつれ、また経済が変化し続けるにつれて、正しい問いと立てる能力はいっそう重要になるだろう。」（拙訳）
同書には、「問い」の重要性をについて述べた箇所があります。
"We believe that employers now and from some time to come will, when looking for talent, follow the advice attributed to the Enlightment sage Voltaire: `Judge a man by his questions, not his answers.`" (p.192)
『我々（著者）は、これからの雇用者は、才能がある人材を探す時に、啓蒙主義の時代の賢人であるヴォルテールの名言に従っていくと考えている。その名言とは、「人を判断するには、その人の答えではなく、その人の問いによって、なすべきである。」』（拙訳）
私が「問学」という言葉を思いつくきっかけとなった本である Make Just One Chnage の著者は、The Right Question Insititue (RGI) という研究所の所長を務めています。昨年の大晦日にこの本を読み終わった時、「問い」によって「メタ認知」が促進されるなど、「問い」の大切さを認識しました。そして、「学び問う」の「学問」について考えを巡らせいる時に、「学問」の文字を逆にした「問学」を思いつきました。その瞬間をきっかけに今日のような活動を始めました。
その本には、経営学の泰斗である Peter Drucker の言葉が引用され、その中にも「正しい問いを立てる」が出てきます。
"The most common source of managment mistakes is not the failure to find the right answer. It is the failure to ask the right question." (p.13)
「経営の失敗における最も一般的な原因は、正しい答えを見つけることができないことではない。正しい問いを立てることができないことだ。」（拙訳）
本研究部のサブタイトルは、このページの上に掲げているように、"Ask more, Learn more. Ask better, Learn better, Live better." （より多くを問い、より多くを学ぶ。より良く問い、より良く学び、より良く生きる）としています。Ask the right question （正しい問いを立てる）には、日ごろから Ask more. より多く問い、Ask better. より良く問いを立てることを経ることにあると考えています。
